Things You Must Know Before Starting A Doctoral Thesis

You have made it through undergraduate degree, worked even hard to achieve your master’s, and now you are going to start your doctorial in the field of study that you have spent years studying.  A doctoral thesis can be overwhelming because you are basically writing a novel to show what you have learned in the past four years or more.  There are some things you should know before you even begin to write your doctoral thesis that no one tells you before you begin.

What You Need To Know Before You Start

After extensive research and reading what PhD graduates had to endure during the process of writing a doctoral thesis, I have come up with a list of thing you need to know to be prepared for what lies ahead for you in the next few years.

  • The first thing that will make or break you when you are starting your doctorial thesis is your supervisor or advisor.  This person is one of the most important parts of writing your thesis and without their guidance you could fail miserable.  If you are having doubts about whether your supervisor will be there for you, you need to change that as soon as possible.  You don’t want someone that won’t show up to meetings and won’t read your stuff.
  • This will take longer than you think to do.  When you start this journey of your life, I’m sure that you have it all planned out and make your self a set schedule to keep yourself on track.  This is good but something will take longer than you expected and that’s okay.  You just have to readjust and keep going.
  • There will probably be a day where you breakdown, freak out, or go a little crazy.  This is normal and you have worked so hard and put so much into your work that you are bound to have at least one day like this.
  • You are allowed to take a day off.  I know this sounds like something that people would do but most PhD students overwork themselves.  Plus giving yourself a day off will let you work better the next day when you start the work again.

These are just some of the things that I have found that can help you get through your doctorial thesis.  With a simple Google search you can find so much more about what other students wish they would have known before they started too.
